If something is novel, it's new and different. It's unique and interesting.

  • Mark took a novel approach to solving the problem.
  • Novel solutions to climate change are needed--fast.
  • What a novel idea!

The word "novel" is also used for long works of fiction consisting of several hundred pages.

  • The teacher assigned a novel to the students.
  • The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a novel that most American kids read in school.
  • Tim says he doesn't like to read novels because he prefers to read about things that are true.
  • She can't put down the novel she's reading. It's so interesting!
