When the word "clip" is used as a verb, it means to cut something.

  • You can use a pair of nail clippers to clip nails.
nail clippers
  • Clippers are used to clip bushes and shrubs.
clippers
  • People who clip hair use a scissors, or clippers.
scissors

 

As a noun, a clip is an object that holds things together:

  • A paper clip holds together pieces of paper.
paperclip
  • Some clips are large enough and strong enough to hold many pages together.
clip
  • People use hair clips to hold their hair in place.

  • A clipboard holds paper. The person who uses the clipboard can write while walking or standing.

We also use the word "clip" when talking about speed:

  • A sail ship can move at a pretty good clip when the wind is blowing.
