skunk

A skunk is a small mammal that uses scent glands for self protection. It's associated with the bad odor it produces to defend itself, or the odor is released upon death, which is quite common along American highways as skunks are often hit by speeding vehicles.

  • Oh, what's that smell? It smells like a skunk.
  • Someone hit a skunk.
  • It smells like a skunk in here.
  • Our gym teacher smells worse than a skunk.

There are a few expressions that use the word "skunk."

  • He's as drunk as a skunk. (He drank a lot of alcohol.)
  • We got skunked by the other team. (We didn't play well against them and they beat us--badly.)
  • Joe went ice fishing and got skunked. (He didn't catch any fish.)
  • Yasmin was skunked by a perfume lady as she walked through Macy's department store. (Someone sprayed too much perfume on her.)
