loop

 

A thing that makes a full circle makes a loop, but a loop doesn't have to take the shape of a perfect circle. A loop may be circular or oval.

  • Some parts of a roller coaster take the shape of a loop.

  • A cowboy's lasso forms a loop in order to snare horses and other animals.

  • A person's fingerprints are composed of loops and whirls.

  • A necklace loops around the wearer's neck. (In this sentence, loop is a verb.)

  • Trains in downtown areas of large cites often go around in a loop.
  • Downtown Chicago is encircled by elevated trains. This area is called The Loop.
