brave

 

A person who is brave does something that requires courage in the face of danger. There are many different ways to be brave.

  • A fire fighter rescues people from burning houses. That's very brave.
  • A police officer goes into dangerous situations when he or she is called to respond to a crime. That's also very brave.
  • The brave men and women of the U.S. military lay their lives on the line every day in countries around the world.
  • People who live under and protest totalitarian governments are brave.
  • People who stand up to corruption in government are brave.
  • It's brave of someone to say what he or she thinks, despite what the majority of people may believe.
  • A child is brave when going to the doctor's office for a vaccination.
  • A young woman is brave when she enters an area of employment that is dominated by men.
  • Be brave. Don't let anyone bully you.

The word "bravely" is an adverb:

  • Four passersby bravely rescued a man from a burning car.
  • After being attacked by a man twice her size, the woman bravely pulled a gun from her purse and shot him in the stomach.
  • The man bravely rushed into the river to save his daughter, but then he got caught in a current and drowned.

The word "bravery" is a noun:

  • The soldier was given a medal for his bravery.
  • He showed bravery in the face of danger.
  • Bravery is required of people who want to teach in difficult schools.
  • It's difficult to show bravery when confronted by an overwhelming opponent.
  • It takes bravery to do something that is going to be physically painful.

American culture note: The word "brave" also refers to a Native American warrior.
